Refuge Public Use Cabin
Upper Ohmer Lake Cabin

Description
A 16' x 18' foot rustic log cabin built in the summer
of 2004. Accessible for mobility impaired users.
Facilities
Maximum occupancy: 4
Two bunk beds, table with benches, wood stove, splitting
maul, crosscut saw, broom, shovel, water bucket, fire extinguisher,
boat with oars, an established campfire ring, and an outhouse.
NOT included: running water, electricity, mattress or
bedding, cooking utensils, lifejackets, or cut firewood.
Access
By vehicle and then a short walk. The trail is a gravel
surface and accessible for mobility impaired users.
Location
The trailhead to the cabin is located on the Skilak Lake
Road, mile 7.5 from the east entrance junction with the Sterling Highway.
The cabin is located .2 miles from the road on the Upper Ohmer Lake

Terrain/Vegetation
Cabin is in a fairly flat area, overlooking the lake.
Surrounded by scattered trees, shrubs, grasses, and wildflowers. The
Hidden Creek wild fire burned 5000 acres across the lake in 1996. Cabin
elevation is approximately 500 feet.

Recreation Opportunities
This cabin allows for an excellent family outing with
a short .2 mile walk from the parking lot to the cabin. Wildlife in
the area includes moose, and black and brown bears. The cabin is located
in the Skilak Wildlife Recreation Area in the Kenai National Wildlife
Refuge. This area is closed to hunting and trapping except that small
game may be taken from October 1 through March 1 by bow and arrow only.
Review Alaska
Department of Fish and Game hunting and fishing regulations. Fishing
is popular for Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden trout.
Special Considerations
Skilak Lake Road receives minimal maintenance in the winter
so check driving conditions before leaving. Bringing a personal cooking
stove is recommended. Carry in potable water or boil surface water 5
minutes before drinking. Users must provide a U. S. Coast Guard approved
flotation device for each passenger aboard the boat, and use boats at
their own risk. Remember to pack out your trash. Contact the Kenai National
